Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon Sign Up

Hi all, I am back with another reading challenge inspired by Pokemon Go. I have recently become quite obsessed with read-a-thons as a way to tackle my TBR, so combining these two things is the natural progression of things.

ReadThemAllThon

Disclaimer: Pokemon belongs to Nintendo. I make 0 monetary profit from my blog, please don’t sue me!

What Is It?

The Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon is a 3 weeks long reading challenge based on the Kanto’s Indigo League. Long-time fans of the series would recognise this as the first set of gyms Ash Ketchum had to conquer in his quest to become the Pokemon Master. Now you, my friends, will also embark on a journey to become the very best. Instead of fighting gym battles, you’ll be reading books instead!

When Is It?

The read-a-thon will run for 3 weeks between Sunday 14th August to Sunday 4th September.

You can sign up anytime between now and the end of the read-a-thon.

How Do I Join?

Create a sign-up post on your own blog/booktube/booklr/etc with the books you will read for the challenge below and title it #ReadThemAllThon TBR or something similar. Then add your link to the link widget below. Please add a link back to this post!

The Challenge/Gyms

There are 8 reading challenges within this read-a-thon, based on the 8 gyms that are in the Indigo League. Earn a badge every time you complete a book!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge01-Boulder

  1. Pewter Gym: The First Book In A Series
This Rock-type gym is the first gym Ash and the Pokemon player ever encounters. Finish this challenge to win a Boulder Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge02-Cascader
  2. Cerulean Gym: A Book That Might Make You Cry
This Water-type gym has a badge that looks like a droplet of your tear, so read a book that will rip your heart out. Finish this challenge to win a Cascade Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge03-Thunder
  3. Vermillion Gym: A Book With Thunderous Hype
Vermillion City is the home to Lt. Surge and his many Electric-type Pokemon. For this challenge, read a book that’s been hyped all over bestseller’s list and the internet.  Finish this challenge to win a Thunder Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge04-Rainbow
  4. Celadon Gym: A Book That Focuses on Diversity
Celadon Gym is one of my favourites, because of it’s colourful Grass-type aesthetics. Read a diverse book and you will earn yourself a Rainbow Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge05-Soul
  5. Fuschia Gym: A Book With A Great Romance
I’ve always been confused by the fact that a Poison-type gym has a heart-shaped badge. Can someone explain please. Read a book that features romance prominently and earn a Soul Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge06-Marsh
  6. Saffron Gym: A Book With Fantasy/Supenatural Elements
Saffron City is where all the Psychic-types hang out, so for this challenge, read a bool with fantasy, magical realism, or paranormal elements. Finish this challenge to win a Marsh Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge07-Flame
  7. Cinnabar Gym: A Book With A Red Cover
Cinnabar Island is famous for red earth and Fire-type Pokemon. For this challenge, read a book with a red cover. Complete this challenge to win a Volcano Badge.
    ReadThemAllThon-Badge08-Earth
  8. Viridian Gym: A Book With Post-Apocalyptic Setting
The final gym is home to a Team Rocket Leader (OK, if it’s been out 10+ years you can’t cry spoilers) and Ground-type Pokemon. For this challenge, read a book featuring a ruined, post-apocalyptic Earth. Finish this to win yourself an Earth Badge.

Extra Points & Fun

The main challenge is to read those eight books in the 3 weeks. However, you can also have ONE POKEMON EACH and use them to keep scores and figure out who’s the very best.

  • Each participant can choose one Pokemon, and will start with i) 10CP (Combat Power) for a Pokemon that can evolve OR ii) 50CP for a Pokemon that cannot evolved e.g. Lapras.
  • For each 10 pages they read during the challenge, their Pokemon will gain +1CP. That’s +10CP per 100 pages!
  • For each gym badge/book completed, they will gain an extra +20CP.
  • For each review you post of a book you read during the Read-a-Thon period, gain an extra +20CP.
  • Each time you tweet under the hashtag #ReadThemAllThon on Twitter, gain +2CP. The maximum number of points you can gain from this is 200.
  • Each time you post a photo of your book + a Pokemon (via Pokemon Go camera function) under the hashtag #ReadThemAllThon on Twitter, gain +5CP. The maximum number of points you can earn from this is 100.
  • When you are 150CP, your Pokemon can evolve, earning you gain an extra +50CP. If your Pokemon has a third evolutionary form, it can evolve again at 400CP and gain you an extra +50CP.
  • If you choose a Magikarp, you can’t evolve until you get to 450CP, but you will gain an extra +120CP when you have a Gyarados. Basically, if you think you can read loads of books, choose a Magikarp.
  • Whoever owns the Pokemon with the highest CP in the end, wins the title of Pokemon League Champion and will earn a prize (to be announced), as well as bragging rights.

For those who are confused with all the numbers, like myself, please use this example picture to guide you.

PRE-EMPTIVE FAQs
Let’s pretend y’all have questions for me already.

If you’re looking for an example sign up post, I have posted mine here.

1. Can I join even though I have 0 clue what a Pokemon is?
But of course! The main point of the read-a-thon is for you to conquer your TBR pile. The Pokemon theme is admittedly awesome but superfluous!

2. Hey, doesn’t choosing a non-evolving Pokemon short-change me points wise?
Yup, you get a headstart in terms of CP but the monsters that have learned Darwin’s theory will catch up and outperform you after 3-4 books. So Choose Wisely.

3. The Pokemon point system is confusing and I hate maths, do I have to do it?
Not at all, I just want a competetitive aspect to the challenge to mirrot the Indigo League, but you’re welcome to just read your books. The point system is entirely optional!

4. Can I choose the same Pokemon as someone else?
Yes. You can choose any Pokemon from any generation you please.

5. What if there are multiple people with the same high point in the end?
The Pokemon Type-Weakness chart will be our friend to determine the final victor.

6. Do I have to do the challenges in Gym order?
No!

7. Can I use the same book for two challenges?
Yes, but you can’t double up on the points so you will get less points.

8. Can I use the graphics in this post?

Definitely! They’re yours to use!

9. I am participating in another reading challenge, can I use the same books for this one?

Yes, as long as they fit the prompts.

10.  Can I read more books and get points for those?

You can, but on two conditions i) you have to finish the original 8 challenges and ii) you can only earn page points (1 CP per 10 pages read) for them, not the completion bonus.

Please comment or tweet me with any questions!

  4. This sounds like so much fun, Aentee! I cannot wait to just gobble books up! I’m feeling super competitive and the books on my shelf are just dying to be read. Definitely will be joining this lovely readathon. Plus it’s Pokemon related so that means I can fangirl all the time! (Even if Pokemon Go is still not released here in our country, boo) Did I mention that I am excited? ❤❤❤

  6. Working on a TBR list right now. This is probably going to coincide with another Read-a-thon I’m doing, plus a Book Bingo type thing, but I couldn’t resist. I’m just trying to decide whether Eevee is the best Pokemon to use for this challenge, because I kind of love Vaporeon.

  9. This looks fab, I’m going to comb my TBR bookcase for picks. I didn’t play Pokémon as a kid, no consoles, but I’ve been enjoying Pokemon GO. 😀

Just to check, rereads are okay for one or two challenges as well?

  10. You creativity astounds me. This is definitely one of the best readathon/reading challenges ever!

I love everything about this. I’ll consider doing it, but can’t guarantee it as I just decided to scale back my blogging and reading to enjoy other leisure activities and blog without stress or obligations.
Perhaps by the time the readathon comes around I’ll feel refreshed and eager to read all the books! I will let you know if so. 🙂

  15. Hey,
I was wondering about the fact, if you would count a little update on Tumblr the same as a Twitter update, since I don’t have Twitter and Tumblr would be my alternative (since I also could post pics there if I want to ^^)

    Greetings

  17. You did a really good job putting this together! I don’t think I could have figured out a CP system. I want to participate but I have joined #arcaugust and I’m not sure if the same book will fit into the gym categories. Going to look at it later. Seriously love this idea though!
