Why this reading challenge?

I have always been a drawn to retellings. Seeing old and well-worn stories given fresh life by a contemporary writer is a testament to the enduring power of words and its capacity to transform. However, a vast amount of the stories I grew up with have been largely forgotten in favour of western fairy tales and Greek mythology.

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings promises doors into worlds that are at once familiar and new. It also serves as a gateway to the writing of 16 Asian authors, and I wanted this reading challenge to help readers interested in the anthology to explore its contributing authors’s other works.

How do I complete this challenge?

Every prompt is an author and to complete the prompt you have to read one of their published book/short fiction/poetry/article.

The challenge is completed when you finish four prompts in any direction, for example, I will finish 1 Down if I read one published work each by Cindy Pon, Rahul Kanakia, Sona Charaipotra, and Roshani Chokshi.

If you’re ambitious, you can try and fulfil all 16 prompts and read every single author on the list.

Questions

1. Can I reread a book during this challenge?

As a few of the authors in the anthology are newer writers with fewer published works, rereading will be fine. We do encourage exploring authors you have not read before during the challenge.

2. Do I get any extra entries to the prize draw for completing more than four books in the challenge?

At this point, each sign up will only be worth one entry for the prize draw.

3. Can I listen to an audiobook instead of reading the book?

Of course! Audiobooks definitely count.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask me!

  1. This sounds brilliant. I am both in a huge reading slump (I haven’t picked up a book in a week. It’s bad) and lacking time right now, so I don’t know if I will be able to participate in the actual challenge, but I am going to keep this grid for reference next time I’m looking for a new read. I’ve only ever read Cindy Pon! Need to sort myself out.
