#ReadersCrossing Sign Up Post

Disclaimer: Nintendo owns Animal Crossing, this is a non-profit reading challenge organised by me.

The holiday season is almost upon us, and around here that means another reading challenge! In keeping with tradition, this one is themed around my latest obsession: Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. You’ll be reading books, completing tasks, making friends, and be surrounded by adorable animals – just like the game itself.

The camp will begin run between  Sunday 10/December to Sunday 31/December, in whatever timezone you’re in. Sign up will be open for the entire period of the reading challenge, as I want to keep #ReadersCrossing as casual and free as the game it is based on.

Similar to #TheReadingQuest which I hosted earlier on this year, the challenge is based on a bingo board. You can either follow a specific path which is based on the Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp themes of Cute, Cool, Natural, and Sporty. Alternatively, you can do the challenges in whatever order you wish.

CUTE – First Across: To finish this path, you’ll be reading graphic novels, contemporary fiction, and sweet romance.

SPORTY – First Down: For this path, you’ll be reading about action heroes and adventurers, along with books created by a team of authors.

COOL – Five Down: Everyone who wants to read all the buzzed about books, award winners, and celebrity memoirs or fiction – follow this path.

NATURAL – Five Across: Get in touch with nature with  books set in the wilderness, filled with animals, or your favourite classics, with this particular path.

The blue squares in the centre are extra challenges, a combination of reading and performing game-related activities such as getting a shot of your campers reading!

Note: You only need to read one book for each of the four corner stages on the challengeboard (e.g. I can read one of the Saga comic books and have it count towards both the Cute and the Sporty path).

As with all my previous reading challenge, this Quest comes with an additional competitive element. Keeping scores and leveling up is entirely optional – especially because there won’t be prizes this round (sorry, Christmas is coming up so I have too many expenses coming up).

LEVELING UP

• All campers starts with 0 Experience Points (EXP), and each book completed for the challenge (in any format: physical, eBook, or audiobook will gain them 2 EXP.
• #OwnVoices novels will give you an addition EXP point, instead of gaining 2 EXP for their completion, you’ll gain 3 EXP.
• You will level up every time you get 10 EXP points. You begin at Level 1.
• Tweeting or Instagram posts on the #ReadersCrossing will earn you points (every 5 tweets/photo will earn you 1 EXP). You can gain a maximum of 5 EXP for your social media interactions. These should be tweets related to the challenge such as comments on your current read, book reacommendations, or posts about the game itself).
• For fun, you can make your own camperID card, you can use screenshots of your character in your campsite, or during other moments of gameplay like the special fulfilled request segments/when you catch a particular bug or fish, it’s really up to you:

There are two ways you can make the ID card, either:

• PSD Version for those who have Photoshop.
• Blank Base for people who use free editing app such as Canva/PicMonkey, just right click and save!

1. Do I have to read the books in order of the bingo?

No, this is a fairly casual reading challenge, as long as the book meets one of the challenges’s criteria, you can read them in whichever order.

2. Can I use the same book for two or more of the challenges?
No. Rereads also do NOT count. You must use a unique book for each of the square.

3. I am participating in another reading challenge, can I use the same books for both?
Of course, as long as it matches the prompts listed. Some of the other reading challenges you can join during the month of December is the LoveOzYA challenge and the Sapphicathon.

4. I can’t figure out which book to read for xx stage, can you help me?
Gladly! I’ll be posting recommendations on the #ReadersCrossing hashtag on social media, but you can jump into the hashtag and ask other participants as well as myself for recs.

6. Do I need a blog to join your #ReadersCrossing?
You can join as long as you have a place to document your reading journey. Be it blog, booktube, tumblr etc…

7.  Can I start a book before 10 December, or use a half-finished book for the challenges?
Yes, that’s completely fine!

8. What is an #OwnVoices? A book featuring a marginalised perspective, written by an author who shares the same marginalised characteristics.If you are unsure, ask me!

9. Can I repeat any of the challenges once I’ve finished? No.

10. I want to join in but I don’t have a book blog or booktube account, can I use my Twitter/Instagram? Yes, this is fine as well – you can do whatever you wish as long as you do the challenge within the timeframe proposed.
