As soon as I started listening to When The Moon Was Ours, I resolved to make graphics from the book quotes. If you’ve known me for any length of time, you’ll quickly realise that I go weak at the knees for images of the night or of flowers, and this book has both in abundance. The writing painted imageries directly into my mind, and I had to get them down – even though I felt inadequately equipped for the task.

  • Quotes and characters belong to the insanely talented Anna-Marie McLemore.

and those who live outside these words.

and those searching for names of their own.
To those who live on the edges,
and in the spaces in between.
I wish for you every light in the sky.

Taken from the last few lines of this book’s utterly gorgeous dedication, I just want to have this imprinted on every surface and committed to memory. I also want to dedicate this post to all of you who know what it’s like to live on the edges and in the in between, you have all my love.

She was a place where darkness held not fear, but the promise of stars.

I made this one for Jenna, as it is her favourite quote from the book. She was the one who recommended Moon to me, so you should always trust her when it comes to book pushing. I loved Miel’s visceral relationship with the roses that bloom from her body, so that’s what I tried to capture here. The background of constellations and stars is a call back to all the times Sam set foiled stars upon Miel’s skin.

She was the wild blossoms and dark sugar that spoke of what the world could be.
She was the pale stars on her brown skin.
She was the whole sky.

This book is just written with so much love, and I can feel it most keenly in passages like this one. Please, just go read this book, I’m just going to sit here and relive it now.

  3. Omg Aentee, these are absolutely gorgeous! I love the colors especially and the quotes are just beautiful. When The Moon Was Ours is on my TBR, posts like these make me want to push it up that list! Maybe I should also get the audiobook to listen to when commuting.. 🙂

  10. I was scrolling through the WordPress reader about to close it when I caught sight of these. I had to STOP and check them out immediately. These are so gorgeous 😍😍😍 I’ve been meaning to start a graphics feature on my blog, too, but I haven’t been inspired. These definitely gave me inspiration. Beautiful. Well done!!
    Have you written a post on graphics? Like, where you get your resources, fonts, all that sort of thing?
