Top Ten Tuesday: Young Adult Book Syllabus

I am so excited for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.  I can’t wait to see what everyone else is going to write up. WARNING: my options are a bit contrived, eep.

Top Ten Tuesday, TTT1. If I Taught:  Psychology 101

TTT5-1

I Would Recommend:  All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
Why:  Because it’s a startling look into depression and survivor’s guilt.

2. If I Taught:  Feminist Literature 101

TTT5-2

I Would Recommend:  Half The World by Joe Abercrombie,
Why:  Because there’s wonderful ladies of all ages and skillset driving the novel.

3.  If I Taught:  Classical Studies 101

TTT5-3

I Would Recommend:  Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman
Why:  Because Alexander The Great is the shiniest conqueror since Achilles himself.

4.  If I Taught:  Animal Care 101

TTT5-4

I Would Recommend:  The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Why:  Because Sean Kendrick convinced a killer water horse to love him.  That’s skills.

5.  If I Taught:  Photography 101

TTT5-5

I Would Recommend:  Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children
Why:  Because it couples atmospheric black and white pictures with a creepy plot.

6.  If I Taught:  World War II History 101

TTT5-6

I Would Recommend:  Code Name Verity
Why:  It’s an engaging and heartbreaking personal account of the victims of war.

7.  If I Taught:  Modern Classics 101

TTT5-7

I Would Recommend:  The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Why:  It takes a classic boy on a quest to self-discovery and puts a delightful macabre twist on it.

8.  If I Taught:  World Travel 101

TTT5-8

I Would Recommend:  Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Why:  Karou visits the most gorgeous places. The story infuses magic into already beautiful locations.

9.  If I Taught:  Game Development 101

TTT5-9

I Would Recommend:  Armada by Ernest Cline
Why:  Never have I read a book that went into so much details about not just one, but two, fictional games. Armada and Terra Forma both sound like they’d be chart toppers in real life.

10.  If I Taught:  Political Studies 101

TTT5-10

I Would Recommend:  Golden Son by Pierce Brown
Why:  Just watching the factions in the universe battling it out in the most cutthroat manner, it will teach you: Don’t do politics.

This was so much fun! I would love to be stalking all your posts this week, please link me if I haven’t already commented on it!

    1. Thank you! You should definitely check out at least The Graveyard Book! It’s a really short read but a great one ❤

    1. I think you’d really love Code Name Verity, Vane! So give it a shot if you have some free space on your TBR. I totally need to check out All The Rage, I’ve heard so many great things about it 🙂

  1. This is a really great list Aentee! I love how you did 10 different topics. These are my favorite kinds of TTT because everyone’s will be so different. I haven’t read any of these books but I’ve heard of all of them! I can’t wait. If I did World War II, The Book Thief would be my recommendation and for Feminist 101, I’d say Throne of Glass because Celaena and Nehemia! Really enjoyed your list.

Here’s my Top Ten, if you’d like to check it out! Anjie @ Love Thy Shelf

    1. I actually thought you were meant to do all the different topics ahaha until I saw everyone else’s posts. oops. But I agree, I love these kinds of TTT, I don’t participate if I know I would be posting the same thing as everyone else, since it’s hard for followers to comment on something they’ve seen 10x on their feed XD But this week is so much fun! I need to read The Book Thief!!

      1. I’ll buy The Graveyard Book right now! I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and really liked it, but I wasn’t a fan if the other two books in the series. I’m still having lots of fun finding new books!

    1. The Graveyard book is a fantastic read! If you enjoy it there’s also an audiobook that’s equally beautifully narrated by Neil Gaiman!

      1. Holy writing genius, Aentee, The Graveyard Book is such a delicious read. I’m 86 pages in and loving every word. This is my first Neil Gaiman book, but it definitely won’t be my last.

  3. All The Bright Places felt like it was only showing the stereotypes of mental illness to me and not characters who were suffering from mental illness but that’s just me hehe. I’ve never seen Half The World before but Joe Abercrombie is a skilled fantasy author, I need to check this out!

    1. Fair enough, I have heard many people saying that about ATBP so I can see where you are coming from! I personally really loved it. Half A King, Half The World are both fantastic, check them out, they are loads of fun!

  4. Spot on with the graphics again!! *_*

I love your whole list (and especially your reason for why we should read The Scorpio Races. SOLD!). I liked how you chose one book for each category – I could never have been strong enough to choose just one. I had a hard time narrowing my list down to ten.

I almost picked up The Graveyard Book at Kinokuniya today but I was trying to be good. Now I wish I had gotten it. Chris Riddell’s illustrations looked beautiful.

    1. Thanks Jenna! I was trying to make it look like a black board ;)!

THE SCORPIO RACES IS AMAZING, read it omg best pony book in all the lands. Strong female lead. Slow burn romance. Killer horses that may love you or eat you or both. DO ITTT. It’s the perfect winter/fall read.

Kinokuniya is such a magical place, I am so envious every time you mention it!

  5. Look at you taking this post to the next level. I love what you did here (as always). Maybe I should stop saying that lol. Just know that I love everything you do. 😀

Daughter of Smoke and Bone has some of the best world building I have read. I have Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children sitting on my shelf right now, and I think I’m going to start it next so that I am nice and prepared for the upcoming movie. 😀

    1. Eee thank you Sarah <3! I love the world is ADOSAB, such a great combination of our reality and the magical world. I am so excited for the Miss Peregrine's movie, I LOVE Eva Green, she can star in anything and I shall watch it.

  7. Great list! Loved how you design with the lovely typography! Adoreeed All the Bright Places ❤ I need to read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children! I don't know why it slightly reminds me of American Horror Story, maybe because of the creepy imagery lol.

    1. Ah yes, the pictures included in the book was very American Horror Story-esque, I definitely think it looks like the intro clips in AHS! Which was your favourite season? I love that show!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I didn’t think AHS was the kind of show I’d like, but one day I was curious 🙂 The intro for AHS is terrifying! My favourite is season 2 – Asylum because it was so dark and twisted. Season 1 was really interesting too! What’s your favourite?

  8. Ahh I love how you went with this week’s topic, Aentee! Although I’m sort of ashamed to say that I’ve only read one book from your list. I’M GOING TO FAIL ALL THESE CLASSES. T_T

I adore Classical Studies–while I’m scared about the 7 POV thing in Legacy of Kings, I still want to read it. 😉

The photos in Miss Peregrine’s are SCARY. That’s why I read the first paragraph, skimmed all the pictures, then put the book down. I adore a good horror book, but PICTURES?? *hides in a hole*

    1. I only read Miss Peregrine’s because of the upcoming movie and because I love Eva Green! With the light firmly ON haha.

Omg I wrote this list before I finished reading Legacy of Kings. Don’t do it Aimee, lmao. Go read a non-fiction classical study. Buttt I saw that one of your cobloggers loved it, so try it out for yourself I guess? Haha sorry for giving you mixed signal!

  9. Shameless confession: I totally decided to go on a tour of Prague last July because of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Then when I got there, I had an entire day to myself to walk Karou’s shoes. Minus me not meeting any fiery-eyed angels, it was awesome XD.

But yes. Totally agree on that as a World Travel book.

    1. I am 100% JEALOUS MARI! That sounds amazing, where are the photos?! I am sad that you did not get to meet an angel but I will concede for a detailed recount of everything else haha!

  10. This is such a wonderful compilation! I’m happy to say I’ve at least read most of these books. Lol. That rarely ever happens! One book that stood out is The Scorpio Races. I’ve been hearing so many recommendations for that one since I’m such a big fan of Ms. Maggie. I definitely have to check it out considering it’s about those majestic creatures.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Eee it means you have excellent taste, Joy! I love The Scorpio Races so much, it’s the book that turned me into a firm Maggie Stiefvater fan, as I was not entirely convinced by her Mercy Falls series. It’s definitely very atmospheric and emotionally moving.
